The Cycle of Change
changes in this world
but flowers will open
just as usual.
~Japanese folk saying
Change is a sign of life. Everything changes because everything that lives, grows and is affected by the world around it. There is a comforting regularity to certain changes such as the change of seasons and how a person grows from an infant to an adult. This is change I can depend on, and which adds value to life because I know that a particular stage won’t last. Babies don’t stay babies very long. Tulips don’t bloom all year. Spring thankfully overtakes winter.
But there is also the change that I resist. These are events that will or could happen in the future but which will challenge me to grow beyond my current limitations. This is scary, hard work. I want to cling to the familiarity of the past and present instead of embracing the possibilities of the future. I want certainty that my efforts will be rewarded. But certainty is never an option; the only option is to accept change or resist it. Change will happen anyway.
I can close myself off from any challenge to the status quo and gradually become a smaller force in the world, or I can move through the changes and challenges life offers to become a larger version of who I’m meant to be in the world. And I’ve found that when I’m open to changing, I feel more alive and am more likely to notice the flowers blooming along the way as well.
