Let’s Do This Right
…if we do this right—
and by that I mean with grace and compassion—
perhaps we’ll see ourselves in strangers.
Really see ourselves for the global family that we are.
And wrap our hearts and our mighty intellect
around protecting, preserving, and caring for
all who inhabit this beautiful world.
And even the world itself.
When you go out for a walk, isn’t it wonderful that the people you pass on the other side of the street wave, smile, or call out a hello! Suddenly, we’re aware that we’re social beings and need people in our life. We’re reminded that the world is interconnected and that our actions impact people and the environment, potentially around the globe.
How do you want your life to be different because of this time? I want to be closer to my best self, using my gifts to make the world better. Some of the qualities that will help me do that are compassion and empathy, patience, gratitude, creativity and courage. I try to strengthen all of those as I go about my day, whether I’m focused on helping my clients, checking in with family and friends, or taking a moment for myself. Frustration and anxiety are easier outcomes but I know the effort I put in now to be a better person will pay dividends far into the future, and that’s the future I want.
Disasters can bring out the best in us or the worst. Each of us gets to decide to return to complacency after this or to step up to create the changes that are necessary to support all living things. How can we be bold and creative when imagining the future? I don’t have answers yet myself, but I won’t have any if I don’t look for them or believe they are possible. The more challenging the problem, the more we need to work together to do it right.
