Let It Go
Let go of the ways you thought life
would unfold: the holding of plans
or dreams or expectations—let it
all go. Save your strength to swim
with the tide.
Jobs, school, graduations, weddings, spring break…all canceled for now. Having to change plans is difficult and disappointing, especially for something we’ve worked for and anticipated with excitement. What makes it harder is not knowing when our lives will return to normal or what that “normal” will be.
Feeling a lack of control when our plans and routines are suddenly changed creates anxiety. There are two ways to deal with this situation. First, we can find the places where we have control: deciding how much we tune in to the news, scheduling little breaks to move and calm ourselves during during the day, and planning projects we can do in the current situation: a house project, a vegetable garden, or finally addressing that back pain we’ve had…
And we can practice accepting what we can’t control. When we go with the flow, we go further faster. We adapt to new conditions and figure out creative solutions. We are open to new possibilities instead of being stuck in the past. Let’s choose to move forward with gratitude for what we still have, with greater resilience to deal with challenges, and with optimism and hope.
