Blessing the Year
We bless this year for all we learned,
For all we loved and lost
And for the quiet way it brought us
Nearer to our invisible destination.
~John O’Donohue from At the End of the Year
Before I look ahead to the new year, I take time to look back on the current year. Did I go in the direction I wanted or hoped to? What obstacles held me back, and what goals and intentions led me forward? What stands out positively and negatively? How can I use the knowledge of both to guide my next year?
This year I’ve been blessed with many happy family events that brought people together, and opportunities to strengthen friendships. I even made new friends through an online course—an unexpected and surprising outcome, especially since I avoid social media and technology in general. I was encouraged by my willingness to tackle difficult projects and openness to trying new things, both at home and in my business. I’m grateful for my attempts to try, to fail, and to try again, and the lessons they continue to teach me.
Cultivating a sense of curiosity and gratitude, embracing the values of integrity and kindness, and having more fun will help counter my workaholic and perfectionist tendencies as I move into the new year. I’m excited to see what changes I can bring about in myself and for others, to deepen relationships, and to create more meaning, more connection, and more joy in the world.
