A Gift and Another and Another…
a small dew droplet
sits atop a bright green leaf
morning air is a gift
We are surrounded by beauty, refreshment and an infinite number of gifts, if we only take the time to notice. Most of the things I think of as gifts are parts of nature: the spider web sparkling with dew, the colorful sunset, the smell of pines…
Other gifts are time, health, strong relationships, humor, or patience that I give myself or receive from others. Some are things I am able to have that make my life easier: a bike, a comfortable house, clothing, a hot shower.
In fact, the more I look for blessings, the more I see. The more I feel blessed, the more grateful I feel. Gratitude leads to generosity which leaves more people feeling blessed, grateful and generous. It’s a virtuous, expanding circle.
When I think I am owed or entitled to these things, or that they come about because of my cleverness or abilities, I’m less likely to share. Let others pick themselves up by their own bootstraps. They should just have a better work ethic. That’s an expanding circle of selfishness and unhappiness. Which circle do you want to be in and which do you create?
